When a stroke occurs, blood flow to an area of the brain is cut off, depriving brain cells of oxygen and causing them to die. A few of the most common symptoms of a stroke are trouble speaking, understanding, and/or walking, and numbness or paralysis of the leg, arm or face (usually on one side of the body). Aides who specialize in at home care for seniors suggest the following stroke prevention tips:

Exercise Regularly

Regular exercise can help older adults lose weight and reduce their blood pressure. A healthy weight, along with healthy blood pressure levels, can reduce the risk of a stroke and a variety of other health conditions. Professionals who care for seniors encourage their clients to engage in at least 30 minutes of exercise each day. From swimming to yoga and tai-chi, older adults can try an endless amount of workouts to keep themselves active and motivated.

Avoid High Cholesterol Foods

Foods such as ice cream, hamburgers, and cheese are high in cholesterol, which is a stroke-inducing substance. Rather than eating these types of foods, older adults should fill their diet with fruits, leafy green vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein.

Quit Smoking

Smoking is an extremely dangerous habit that accelerates clot formation by thickening the blood and increasing plaque buildup in the arteries. Therefore, quitting is one of the most effective ways for a senior to reduce their risk of a stroke. In order to quit smoking, those who provide home care for seniors recommend nicotine pills or patches, medicine, or counseling. While quitting smoking can be a real challenge, it can potentially save a senior’s life.

Limit Alcohol Use

Just like smoking, excessive drinking can promote blood clots and plaque buildup. For this reason, older adults should refrain from overdrinking and only drink on an occasional basis or during social functions. Out of all of the drink options out there, red wine is encouraged because it is full of resveratrol which may protect the brain cells and heart.

Bridgewater seniors should take these tips to heart. According to the American Stroke Association, 80 percent of strokes are preventable.
